Understanding Organized Real Estate

Some people, even real estate professionals, are not very clear on the difference between the terms “REALTOR®” and "agent," or whether a difference even exists. Often the general public, as well as new licensees, assume that a licensed agent is automatically a REALTOR®. Not true. If this were true, it would certainly make for a better industry, but unfortunately, that’s simply not the case.

For starters, understand that all REALTORS® are also agents (or brokers), but that all agents are not necessarily REALTORS® (but they should be!). Simply put, a REALTOR® is an agent who has recognized the value and joined the ranks of organized real estate, hence, he is still an agent, but he’s earned to right to use the trademarked term “REALTOR®” as well. Becoming a REALTOR® (and yes, you are supposed to use the “®” every time you use the term on your marketing material!) provides opportunity for community involvement and volunteer leadership while simultaneously holding members to the highest standard of professional real estate practices. All of this directly relates to the three-tier structure that is always functioning, albeit sometimes staged seemingly behind the scenes, to ensure the overall well being of the real estate industry.

The Difference: Organized Real Estate

Taking the required courses, paying the necessary fees, and passing the real estate exam qualifies you to sell real estate. However, unless you become an active member of your local, state, and national associations, you will not be authorized to consider, call, or promote yourself a REALTOR®. Furthermore, you will be hard-pressed to find a broker who will allow you to put your license under his own. In order to elevate yourself to REALTOR® status, you need only make the effort to join the ranks of the other prestigious professionals at the three-levels; local association, state association, and the national association.

It is becoming increasingly clear to the general public, through consumer awareness and education, that there is indeed a difference between doing business with someone who is merely a licensee and someone who belongs to the elite REALTOR® crowd.
